RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
