In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
